"Having you come to our home and consult with us before we got Gibson was honestly the best thing we could have done....
Without you [training us], Gibson would not be the
great family dog that he is.
Thank you for being part of our family."
- Gillian and Matt Ryan

"By working with Barry I've gained great insight into the dog's way of thinking [and] how to better communicate what is expected of
my pets.  The dogs have responded very well to the lessons
and my high-drive dogs have a greater sense of purpose"

- Morrison Waud

"Barry has been a pleasure to work with.  My two dogs' behavior has vastly improved over the past couple months.  He has helped us develop a relationship that is enjoyable for both dog and human.
I recommend him to all my friends who are in the process
of becoming dog owners.

A new puppy! You're probably imagining wet kisses and weekends of playing fetch.  But getting a dog is a big decision. Dog Star gives you the benefit of knowing -- in advance -- what you don't want to learn later.  We help you answer some very important questions:

  • Is there a good or bad time to get a dog?
  • What breed would work best with my family?
  • Should I adopt from a shelter or go through a breeder?
  • What about those adds in the paper?
  • Are males more difficult to train than females?
  • Once we find a dog we want, then what do we do?
  • Okay, we know what we want and where we’re getting it.  Now what!?
  • “We have a dog who is great except he…[fill in the problem behavior].  What can we do?”

For more than 20 years, we've prepared families and households like yours for successful, positive homecomings.

Here are some of the topics we’ll cover together:

Pre-homecoming: After we figure out answers to the questions above, together we’ll:

  • Prepare for the change in your routine and lifestyle
  • Prepare your home, family, and friends for the new arrival.
  • Start training you to train the your dog.  We’ll teach you the basics of canine behavior, body language, comprehension, etc.  We believe it’s better for you to train your dog, instead of the other way around!
Homecoming/Acclimation: Once your pooch has come home, we begin the acclimation process; we already laid a foundation through the above subjects.  Our experience has taught us that a dog will acclimate to whatever environment he/she
is in; perhaps not how we humans expect!  So, next we move into:

  • Crate training, housebreaking, boundaries
  • The world of new stimuli (home, car, neighborhood, etc.)
  • Puppy life: working with the pup for the first 4-5 months of it’s life
  • Other life forms: Strangers, kids, other pets in the home, etc.
Basic Obedience: Once you and your dog are ready, we start basic obedience training.  Maybe you’ve had your dog for a while but he or she doesn’t quite behave like you want. We’ll train you to train (or re-train) your dog using a practical, positive, and loving approach for a safe, healthy, and fun family life in the city or suburbs.
